Hyperpigmentation Treatments & Removal: Shedding Light on Skin Discolouration and Brightening Solutions.
Hyperpigmentation, also commonly referred to as pigmentation, is characterised by patches of darkened skin, and can be a source of concern for many individuals. Some people may also be affected by hypopigmentation which is the loss of colour or white patches of skin. In this blog though, we’ll be covering some treatments that can help with hyperpigmentation/pigmentation.
Whether caused by sun exposure, hormonal changes, or post-inflammatory responses, hyperpigmentation can affect anyone. However, various treatment options are available to address and reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation. In this blog, we will delve into the world of hyperpigmentation treatments and removal, shedding light on effective solutions for skin discoloration and exploring the concept of skin brightening. By understanding these treatments, you can regain confidence and achieve a more even and radiant complexion.
Understanding Hyperpigmentation
Hyperpigmentation occurs when excess melanin, the pigment responsible for skin colour, is produced in specific areas, resulting in dark patches or spots. Common forms of hyperpigmentation include sunspots, freckles, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Understanding the underlying causes and types of hyperpigmentation is crucial in choosing the most appropriate treatment.
Topical Treatments for Hyperpigmentation
Topical treatments are often the first line of defence against hyperpigmentation. Ingredients such as hydroquinone, kojic acid, retinoids, vitamin C, and azelaic acid are commonly used in topical creams and serums to inhibit melanin production, lighten dark spots, and promote skin cell turnover. These treatments can be effective for mild to moderate hyperpigmentation and are usually applied directly to the affected areas. At Injex we have a range of products from our Skinjex range specifically designed to target pigmentation and believe it’s essential to include a home care routine when trying to target and reduce pigmentation. It is also crucial to use a daily SPF50+ sunscreen. This will assist in drastically reducing further pigmentation and prolonging the pigmentation reduction effects of topical products and treatments. We recommend AiryDay which we also sell in-store.
Chemical Peels for Hyperpigmentation Removal
Chemical peels offer a deeper exfoliation and are effective in treating various skin concerns, including hyperpigmentation. During a chemical peel, a solution containing alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs), or other exfoliating agents is applied to the skin, promoting the shedding of dead skin cells and stimulating cell turnover. This process helps fade hyperpigmentation and reveals brighter, more even-toned skin. At Injex we have a range of peels for pigmentation depending on the severity of your pigmentation, or how much downtime you can afford. Some require little to no downtime like our Glycolic peel, and others require a weeks downtime such as the Elaine Brennan Peel.
Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy
Laser and IPL therapies target hyperpigmentation by delivering concentrated light energy to the affected areas. These treatments work by breaking down melanin and stimulating collagen production, leading to the gradual fading of dark spots. Laser and IPL treatments can be highly effective for stubborn or deep hyperpigmentation and may require multiple sessions for optimal results. Despite having both Laser & IPL machines, we tend to opt for Laser over IPL as we believe it to be a more efficient treatment for targeting pigmentation. However, if you have a preference for modality, we are happy to discuss those options with you as well. If you’d like to learn more about the differences between IPL & Laser, feel free to read our blog.
Microdermabrasion for Skin Exfoliation
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive treatment that uses tiny exfoliating crystals or a diamond-tipped wand to gently remove the outermost layer of dead skin cells. This process helps improve skin texture, fade hyperpigmentation, and promote a brighter complexion. Although microdermabrasion may not completely remove deep-seated hyperpigmentation, it can be effective for mild cases and in combination with other treatments. Skin Lightening and Brightening Treatments
Skin lightening treatments focus on reducing the production of melanin to achieve a more even complexion. Ingredients such as hydroquinone, arbutin, licorice extract, and niacinamide are commonly used in skin lightening products. These treatments can be applied topically or administered through professional treatments, targeting specific areas of hyperpigmentation for a more uniform skin tone.
Protecting and Maintaining Results
After undergoing hyperpigmentation treatments, it is crucial to protect your skin from further sun damage to maintain the results. As mentioned earlier, sunscreen with a high SPF is a crucial part of this process. Being sun safe, by wearing a hat, sunglasses and skin covering clothing will also play a major role. Whilst we recommend everyone gets a daily dose of vitamin D, making sure your skin is protected will help ensure your results last as long as possible and you minimise any further damage to your skin. It’s estimated that the sun causes up to 90% of skin damage is caused by the sun.
