Tear Trough

Tear troughs are the hollows that can appear between the lower eyelid and upper cheek, often associated with factors such as ageing, genetics, or weight changes. These hollows may contribute to the appearance of dark circles, fine lines, or a sunken look beneath the eyes.

At Injex Clinics, we offer consultations for non-surgical tear trough treatments. For some people, this approach may help restore subtle volume beneath the eyes and reduce the appearance of shadows or creases, supporting a refreshed look.

A comprehensive consultation is required to determine your suitability for treatment.

How we assess your suitability for our tear trough treatment

A thorough skin and medical evaluation is essential to determine if the treatment is right for you. Our practitioners will analyse your skin type, facial structure and medical profile. We’ll also take note of any medications you’re currently taking. Additionally, we will evaluate your psychological readiness, set clear and realistic expectations and address any questions you have to help you make a well-informed decision.

Note that individual outcomes can vary based on factors such as your metabolism, facial structure and lifestyle. We’ll discuss these with you in detail during the consultation.

Factors that may affect your eligibility for the treatment

If any of the following conditions apply to you, our practitioners may suggest alternative options:

  • You are pregnant or currently breastfeeding.
  • You have a history of epilepsy, cancer, porphyria, enzyme disorders or autoimmune conditions.
  • You are prone to developing keloid scars.
  • You have known allergies to hyaluronic acid, lidocaine or latex.

Risks and side effects to be aware of

All medical procedures carry risk. Outcomes vary between individuals, and no treatment can be guaranteed. This list is not a complete list of all potential risks & side effects and is meant as a guide only. Full treatment risks and side effects will be discussed in an in-person consultation.

During your consultation, we will discuss with you the potential risks and side effects of a non-surgical treatment for bags under your eyes. These include:

  • Pain, swelling, bruising or numbness at the treated area.
  • Tenderness or itching.
  • Small lumps or bumps beneath the skin, which may gradually resolve on its own.
  • Infections and allergic reactions.
  • Vision loss.

While side effects typically subside within a few days, each person’s response to treatment can vary. Some may experience only slight swelling, while others may notice prolonged irritation or discomfort.

It’s crucial to observe any changes in the first few hours and days following your treatment. If you notice persistent inflammation or any severe reaction beyond 48 hours, contact us and your general practitioner immediately.

Before- and after-care instructions

What you do before and after your facial volume treatment is essential to ensure proper recovery and optimal, long-lasting results. Follow these guidelines to support healing and recovery:

Before your appointment

  • Do not take anti-inflammatory, blood-thinning medications — Avoid aspirin, fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, St. John’s wort, ginseng, ibuprofen and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) for at least two weeks before your session to minimise bruising.
  • Arrive with clean, bare skin — Skip makeup and skincare on the day of your appointment.
  • Avoid alcohol — Refrain from drinking alcohol for at least 24 hours before your treatment.
  • Plan your schedule wisely — Book your session at least two weeks ahead of any major event to allow time for healing.

After your treatment

  • Pause active skincare products — Avoid using cosmeceutical products containing active ingredients such as AHAs, retinol or vitamin C for at least a week.
  • Limit physical activity — Skip intense workouts or strenuous exercise for 24 hours to prevent unnecessary swelling.
  • Manage swelling — Apply a cold compress for 15 minutes each hour to help reduce any discomfort.
  • Protect your skin from temperature extremes — Stay away from direct sunlight, UV light, saunas and freezing temperatures.
  • Refrain from touching the treated area — Do not rub, massage or apply pressure for at least 24 hours.
  • Delay travel plans — Wait at least two weeks before flying to allow for uninterrupted healing.

FAQs

.

Tear troughs, also known as nasojugal folds, are hollow depressions that run between the lower eyelid and the upper cheek. They can become more noticeable over time due to volume loss, often caused by ageing or weight loss.

As we age, the fatty tissue beneath the lower eyelid and upper cheek naturally diminishes, causing the mid-face to lose its fullness. This reduction in subcutaneous fat, along with the muscles losing their elasticity, results in volume loss and skin thinning, which can make tear troughs and under-eye hollows appear more pronounced.

This non-surgical approach may help restore subtle volume beneath the eyes, which can reduce the appearance of hollows or shadows in the tear trough area. For some individuals, this can create the appearance of a smoother and more refreshed under-eye region.

During your consultation, our practitioners will explain the treatment process in detail and assess whether it is appropriate for you. If suitable, a treatment plan can be tailored to your individual goals and facial structure.

The longevity of tear trough treatment results varies between individuals. On average, effects may last from six to 18 months, though in some cases they can extend longer. Factors such as age, skin type, metabolic rate, lifestyle habits, and smoking may influence how long results are maintained.

To help sustain the desired look, some people choose to have maintenance treatments. During follow-up appointments, our practitioners can review your progress and discuss whether a touch-up treatment may be appropriate.

Discomfort levels can vary from person to person, but many people describe this treatment as only mildly uncomfortable. At Injex Clinics, our practitioners use numbing cream and careful techniques to help reduce potential sensations during the procedure.
