Marionette Lines

Marionette lines, also known as melomental folds, are vertical wrinkles or folds that form on both corners of the mouth and extend towards the chin. They naturally develop with age as collagen and elastin levels decline, creating the appearance of a downturned mouth even when your face is at rest. At Injex Clinics, we offer a non-surgical solution to help soften creases and restore volume to the lower face.

What to expect at your first consultation

A thorough skin assessment is the first step in determining if our treatment for marionette lines fits your needs. This session allows our practitioners to assess your unique facial structure, review your medical history and discuss your treatment goals.

During your first consultation, we will:

  • Examine your skin type, facial anatomy and any medications you are currently taking.
  • Evaluate your overall health and psychological readiness for the treatment.
  • Provide a step-by-step explanation of how the treatment works and what results you can realistically expect.
  • Discuss possible side effects and complications.
  • Answer any questions you may have about the treatment to ensure you’re fully informed every step of the way.

Who may not be a suitable candidate for the treatment

This treatment may not be suitable for individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Additionally, some medical conditions could increase the risk of complications. Please inform us if you have:

  • Epilepsy, cancer, porphyria or enzyme disorders.
  • A history of allergic reactions to latex, lidocaine or hyaluronic acid.
  • An autoimmune condition or a tendency to develop keloid scars.

For those who are not suitable candidates, we may suggest alternative solutions that better align with their concerns, circumstances and desired outcomes.

Associated risks and side effects

Following treatment, some individuals may experience mild and temporary reactions, including:

  • Pain, swelling, bruising or numbness at the treated area.
  • Tenderness or itching.
  • Small lumps or bumps beneath the skin, which will gradually resolve on its own.

Although rare, more serious complications such as vision loss, allergic reactions and infections can occur. In case of unusual or prolonged symptoms, reach out to us or your general practitioner right away for medical assistance.

Pre- and post-treatment care

Following the proper care instructions before and after your facial volume treatment can help minimise the occurrence of side effects, ensure adequate healing and support the best possible long-term outcome. Below are important guidelines:

Before your appointment

  • Do not use blood-thinning medications and supplements such as aspirin, fish oil or vitamin E at least two weeks before your session to minimise bruising.
  • Arrive with a clean, makeup-free face to minimise the risk of infection.
  • Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before your appointment.
  • Schedule your appointment at least two weeks before any major events to allow time for healing.

After your treatment

  • Do not apply makeup for the rest of the day.
  • Do not use cosmeceutical skincare with active ingredients such as AHAs, retinol or vitamin C for at least a week.
  • Refrain from intense physical activity or strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
  • Use a cold compress for 15 minutes each hour to help reduce swelling if needed.
  • Avoid exposure to extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, including direct sun exposure, UV light and saunas.
  • Avoid massaging or applying pressure to the treated area for a day after treatment.
  • Refrain from international travel for two weeks after the treatment.

Please note that results from the treatment may vary for each individual, depending on factors such as facial anatomy, metabolism, treatment type and lifestyle.

FAQs

.

Marionette lines or melomental folds are vertical creases that extend from the corners of the mouth down towards the chin, which resemble the features of marionette puppets. Like other types of wrinkles, they develop as the skin produces less collagen and elasticity over time.

While ageing, which results in the skin stretching and losing elasticity, is the primary cause, other factors like chronic sun exposure and smoking can accelerate the formation of wrinkles and fine lines.

Undergoing a non-surgical marionette lines treatment can help replenish lost volume in the mouth and chin areas. This approach can help minimise the appearance of fine lines and create smooth, natural contours.

However, note that marionette lines are a natural part of ageing — while treatments can help soften their appearance, no procedure can stop the ageing process. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and following a proper skincare regimen that includes active ingredients can further support long-term skin health.

On average, effects may last between six to 12 months, though in some cases, they may last anywhere between two to five years. Factors such as skin type, age, lifestyle, smoking habits, treated area and metabolism all influence how long the results can last.

The timing for touch-up treatments varies based on individual goals and how long the results last. Follow-up sessions are typically scheduled every six to 12 months to maintain target results.

Keep in mind that this treatment may not completely erase deeper lines. At most, it can help reduce their visibility.
