Dermal filler aftercare – The Do’s & Don’ts of Cosmetic injectables

So you’ve just had dermal fillers, at this point it’s all about checking yourself out in the mirror, taking a million selfies and googling new Mac lipstick shades.  It’s an exciting time, and whether you’ve had lips, cheeks, tear troughs or something else, you might have forgotten all those things your Nurse told you to do and not to do.  But never fear, we’ve got you covered with our list of do’s & don’ts.

Do

  • Ice the area – On and off for 10 minute intervals is recommended
  • Hydrate – Stay hydrated with lots of water! Dermal filler is made from a substance that attracts water, so the more hydrated you are, the more full your fillers will look!
  • Use arnica – If you bruise easily, have this on hand.  You can get it in tablet and topical form, use both for best results.
  • Have an LED session – LED light therapy is proven to speed up the healing process, so if you do bruise, book yourself in for a session.  Our rate of bruising is so low, we offer these FREE for anyone we bruise
  • Take an anti-histamine – Anti-histamines…as the name suggests, reduces the bodies histamine response which is responsible for swelling.  Taking an anti-histmane will help reduce this response and thus, less swelling.
  • Rest – it’s a great excuse to have a rest. Strenuous activity gets the bloody pumping and can lead to brusining and swelling in the area.

Don’t

  • Drink alcohol – alcohol thins the blood, so any trauma or injury you have will bruise more. (Hands up who’s had a drunken night out and woken up with a whopper of a bruise! Haha)
  • Fly for 2 weeks – the high altitude and pressure can potentially exacerbate swelling, but mostly we just want you to be around in case we need to see you again.
  • Exercise – Exercise gets the blood flowing, and with that, increase the risk of bruising and swelling.
  • Take Aspirin – You may want some pain relief after fillers, but go with something that doesn’t contain aspirin.  Aspirin thins the blood which can lead to bruising.

Before filler prep

Ok, so if you haven’t made the leap yet to get dermal filler and want to know if there’s anything you can do to avoid bruising, here are our top tips:

  • For 2 weeks before your appointment (unless prescribed by your Doctor) cease the following: Glucosamine, Green tea, Tumeric, Aspirin
  • 24 hours prior to your appointment don’t drink alcohol
  • Hit the gym at least 4 hours before your appointment
  • Got an event coming up? Book in at least 4 weeks before an event

At the end of the day, none of these things are going to guarantee you won’t bruise or swell.  The fact is, there are MILLIONS of veins, arteries, capillaries, nerve endings etc. in the body, and avoiding them is actually impossible.  With experienced practitioners though, this is definitely minimised.  So as per usual, make sure you do your research and visit a reputable clinic.
