Managing the Appearance of Scars

Scars tell a story, but they do not have to define your skin. Whether caused by acne, injury, or surgery, scarring can affect how you feel about your appearance. At Injex Clinics, we offer evidence-based, non-surgical scar treatments designed to improve skin texture, tone and confidence. Our expert team customises each treatment plan to suit your skin’s individual needs, using clinically proven devices and products for results you can see and feel.

What Is Scarring?

Scars form as part of your skin’s natural healing process when the dermis (the deeper layer of skin) is damaged. The body produces collagen to repair the wound, but the resulting tissue is often different in texture and appearance from surrounding skin. Some scars are flat and pale, while others may be raised (Keloid), sunken (Atrophic), or pigmented (PIHP).

Differences Between Types of Scars

Not all scars are the same. Understanding the type of scar you have is key to selecting the most effective treatment. At Injex Clinics, we commonly see three major categories of scarring:

1. Raised Scars (Keloid or Hypertrophic)

Appearance: Thick, firm, elevated scars that may be pink, red, or darker than the surrounding skin.
Causes: Often the result of trauma, surgery, piercings, or even acne.
Features:

  • Hypertrophic scars remain within the boundaries of the original wound.

  • Keloid scars extend beyond the original injury and can continue growing over time.
Treatment Considerations: These scars are more common in darker skin types and may require specific treatment plans such as laser, prescription creams, or referral for medical therapy.

2. Sunken Scars (Atrophic)

Appearance: Indented or pitted scars that sit below the surrounding skin surface.
Causes: Typically caused by severe acne, chickenpox, or injury that destroyed collagen in the healing process.
Types:

  • Ice pick scars – narrow and deep

  • Boxcar scars – broad with well-defined edges

  • Rolling scars – soft, sloping edges that give the skin a wavy texture
Treatment Considerations: These respond well to collagen-stimulating treatments such as CO2 laser, Secret RF, and skin needling.

3. Pigmented Scars (PIHP – Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation)

Appearance: Flat discolouration ranging from pink to red, brown, or grey, depending on skin tone.
Causes: A common outcome of inflammation such as acne, bites, burns or trauma. It is not technically a scar, but a pigment response to skin injury.
Treatment Considerations: While PIHP may fade over time, targeted treatments like Curas laser, chemical peels, LED light therapy and Skinjex brightening products can help accelerate clearance and even out skin tone.

FAQs

.

This depends on the type and depth of scarring. Atrophic or pitted acne scars respond well to skin needling, Secret RF, or CO2 laser. A personalised skin consultation is recommended to determine the most appropriate approach.

Most people benefit from a series of 3 to 6 treatments, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. However, this varies based on scar severity and treatment method.

Treatments such as CO2 laser may involve 5 to 7 days of social downtime with redness and skin flaking. Skin needling and Secret RF typically involve 24 to 72 hours of mild redness.

We recommend avoiding makeup for 24 to 48 hours after any skin resurfacing treatment to allow the skin to heal and avoid irritation.

Many scar treatments are not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding. LED Light Therapy and some topical skincare options may be safe. Please inform our team before booking.

While no treatment can guarantee full scar removal, our goal is significant improvement in appearance, texture and skin confidence.
